A white paper from Rittal Corp., Urbana, Ohio, discusses how thermoelectric coolers work, efficiency improvements in their design, and the advantages they offer for cooling industrial enclosures.

When compared to alternate cooling methods such as vapor-compression refrigeration and water-cooled systems, using thermoelectric technology to cool industrial enclosures can provide advantages for some applications. Thermoelectric coolers use an electrical current passed through semiconductors to facilitate temperature change. They eliminate the need for refrigerants and operate with fewer moving parts, cooling enclosures to temperatures below or near ambient conditions while producing less noise and vibration than alternate cooling methods.
