A 50/50 joint venture plans to build the first world-scale organometallics catalyst plant in the Middle East, in Al-Jubail.

Albemarle Corp., Baton Rouge, La., a maker of specialty catalysts, has formed the venture with Saudi Arabia’s Ibn Hayyan Plastic Products Co. for an early 2012 startup. The new facility will have the capacity to produce more than 6,600 tons annually of tri-ethyl aluminum equivalents, which are used primarily as a co-catalyst in Ziegler-Natta type systems for olefin polymerizations.
