It is official: The Frito-Lay manufacturing facility in Killingly, Conn., has unplugged itself from the Northeast power grid after installing a combined heat and power cogeneration system.

With the CHP system, the plant can generate its own electric power, providing nearly 100 percent of its electricity requirements. The company also will convert waste heat generated onsite into steam, helping Frito-Lay manufacture its snack products completely onsite.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, which co-funded the infield demonstration programs, cogeneration has the potential to help U.S. industry achieve a sustainable future by enabling more plants to become more energy efficient and minimize their environmental impact.
