In addition to increasing efficiency, Stellar’s design focused on maximizing safety. While many standard safety features were implemented throughout the facility, one of the more innovative aspects of the system is its use of a dual-pressure defrost solenoid valve for the defrost cycle. The valve opens a smaller orifice to implement a soft defrost for a predetermined time, thereby allowing the coil pressure to be brought up slowly before the larger orifice of the defrost solenoid valve is opened. This method prevents hydraulic shock and increases the safety of the overall system.
“If the refrigerant is not pumped out of a coil before it goes in defrost mode,
hydraulic shock can occur, blowing out an evaporator and causing a major leak,”
says Morris. “This two-step system steps it in slowly, preventing the
possibility of the evaporator being blown out.”
