A closed-loop, evaporative (wet surface) cooler will be manufactured and supplied to the Calpine Otay Mesa power plant in San Diego County, Calif., by Buffalo, N.Y.-based Niagara Blower. The unit, called a WSAC, will cool the plant’s main loop water and optimize use of scarce water sources.
The WSAC is used for auxiliary loop cooling and vacuum steam condensing at simple and combined-cycle power plants. The company says these systems combine a cooling tower and heat exchanger in a single structure and are a cost-effective heat-transfer technology providing lower outlet temperatures and requiring less space and horsepower. The unit also can use poor quality water as spray makeup.
