Conveyor Links Cold Storage, Food Processing Facilities

Stellar, a Jacksonville, Fla., design, engineering, construction and mechanical services firm, says it is building an $11 million refrigerated distribution facility for Southern Cold Storage in Gadsden, Ala. Stellar will provide full design/build services for the facility, which will be located adjacent to Keystone Foods LLC's processing plant.

The 70,000 ft

²cold storage facility is expected to be complete in August. Stellar also is building the Keystone Foods facility, which will produce fully cooked chicken for foodservice customers. Once both buildings are complete, final packaged products from Keystone Foods' plant will be shipped through a connecting corridor on a pallet conveyor to the Southern Cold Storage facility. Products will be stored in the facility's freezer at -10°F (-23°C).

Southern's cold storage equipment includes a freezer, cold dock, administration office, battery charging area and ammonia refrigeration machine room.
