Due to energy cost trends and environmental considerations, chiller manufacturers face several challenges. While minimum efficiency levels are increasing, a greater emphasis is put on partial--load performance. There also is a focus on sustainability while, at the same time, the pressure to be competitive has increased.

To help chiller makers address those concerns, Oakwood, Ga.-based Bitzer developed the Orbit 8 Series, which has just gone into series production. The series includes six displacements with cooling capacities from 15 to 40 tons at 60 Hz. The compressors have been designed specifically for R410A. One series has been optimized for air-cooled applications and heat pumps while the other is intended for water-cooled chiller operation.
