SPX Cooling Technologies Inc., along with Xcel Erectors Inc., one of its wholly owned subsidiaries, was recognized by the Greater Houston Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors with the Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) Platinum Award.

The organization’s environmental, health and safety committee created the STEP Award in 1989 to acknowledge large and small contractors. There are six levels of STEP achievement: participant, bronze, silver, gold, platinum and diamond.

Charlotte-based SPX's construction team and EHS department worked in tandem on the STEP application procedure, according to the company. The process consisted of a 12-part qualification procedure as well as a 20-part self-assessment. In addition, OSHA logs and experience modification rates were closely evaluated. Another key criteria for Platinum level was that companies’ incident rates had to be a minimum of 25 percent lower than the Bureau of Labor and Statistics’ national average for similar industries.
