Water-Based Dispersion Simplifies Pill-Coating
January 6, 2011
Developed to simplify and accelerate aqueous film-coating operations, Kollicoat Smartseal 30 D opens doors for formulating tablet, pellet and particle coatings in the pharmaceutical industry, says its manufacturer.
BASF, Florham Park, N.J., developed Kollicoat, a water-based dispersion for taste-masking and moisture-barrier applications. Kollicoat “combines a strong protective effect with efficient processing,” says Ralf Fink, vice president of global marketing pharmaceutical ingredients.
Highly impermeable to water vapor, the dispersion helps preserve the potency of sensitive active ingredients. The polymer is stable in saliva and specifically soluble in gastric juice. This ensures effective protection from unpleasant taste in the patient’s mouth as well as rapid release and onset of active ingredient action in the stomach.
