Short-term power loss from power interruptions, brown-outs or utility
switching can quickly turn into a critical loss of cooling in mission critical
facilities. To help processors cope with such interruptions, McQuay
International added a RapidRestore option for its Daikin McQuay Pathfinder
Model AWS air-cooled chillers with variable frequency drive (VFD).
The RapidRestore option allows the chiller to restart in as little as 30
seconds after power is restored, making it well suited for cooling-critical manufacturing
processes. The restore option helps solve power loss concerns by quickly
returning processes to the necessary cooling levels, eliminating downtime.
The air-cooled chiller with VFD reduces electrical utility expenses to
levels similar to those from more complex water-cooled systems, says Eddie
Rodriguez, chiller product manager at McQuay International, Minneapolis. Rodriguez
also notes that the chiller's compressor and fan design allow it to offer low sound
