A quarter-century old high-voltage direct-current transmission station is getting a $20 million refurbishment.

The project includes the replacement of the valves and valve-cooling system, and a new installation of ABB’s MACH2 control and protection system. ABB, Zurich, received the order from Vermont Electric Power Co., Rutland, Vt., to modernize the station that ABB delivered in 1985. The high-gate back-to-back converter station links the electrical systems of the state of Vermont and the province of Quebec.

The upgraded station should be operational by year-end 2012.
