Grocery store chain Supervalu Inc., Eden Prairie, Minn., chose Baltimore-based Danfoss to provide a range of energy saving products and support for a remodel project that created the company’s first grocery store operating 100 percent on natural refrigerants. Danfoss provided the grocery store chain with refrigeration system design, strategy, installation and commissioning.

The remodel of Supervalu’s Albertsons store in Carpinteria, Calif., included a facility expansion — doubling the store’s footprint to 43,000 ft2 — and the conversion of an R22-based refrigeration system to one that uses environmentally friendly natural refrigerants. The new system operates primarily on CO2 but also includes ammonia in medium-temperature cascade systems and propane in select self-contained floor cases.

The Danfoss products used include CO2 controls for low-temperature applications, compressor controls, temperature transducers, pump and liquid vapor separator safety controls.
