A large ammonia leak at a Fresh Express food processing plant in Streamwood, Ill., sent two firefighters and five other people to the hospital on June 6.

Streamwood Fire Chief Chris Clark attributed the leak to damaged piping, possibly due to a forklift or other equipment hitting the anhydrous ammonia refrigeration piping. According to local reports, though Fresh Express shut down the ammonia system quickly, a 5x50' pool of ammonia puddled on the floor. The fire department worked to clear the ammonia using industrial fans and, reportedly, an air boat from a nearby community.

All of those injured were treated at area hospitals and released.
