The Stieglbrauerei zu Salzburg brewery was founded in 1492, and it is the only brewery in Austria that still uses a horse-drawn carriage to transport its product.  With that in mind, some might find it surprising that a 525-year-old business is relying on a new custom automation system to keep things flowing.

Stiegl’s brewhouse in Salzburg is using Siemens’ Simatic S7 technology and WinCC software, digitizing its processes from start to finish, to brew different types of beer more efficiently and at a lower cost.

The system was commissioned in May 2015, and production has been running without interruption ever since. All processes in the various areas of the brewery – including the brewhouse and the fermenting, storage and specialty cellars – are seamlessly controlled and visualized, and the master brewer can now individually compose each recipe and adapt them flexibly.
