As the largest exposition dedicated to the ammonia and natural refrigeration industry, the annual IIAR Natural Refrigeration Conference and Expo provides a unique opportunity for engineers, end users, wholesalers, manufacturers and contractors involved in natural refrigeration using ammonia and carbon dioxide to gather, learn and share. The 2018 IIAR Natural Refrigeration Conference and Expo brings together those involved with natural refrigeration industry technologies, services and products in one place.
The Broadmoor Hotel and Resort in Colorado Springs, Colo., plays host to the natural refrigeration event, planned for March 18-21. At the annual meeting of the International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration, opportunities for industrial refrigeration education abound.
On Sunday, IIAR will hold meetings for several committees: CO2 handbook, international, education, government relations, piping, research, standards, marketing, code and certificate testing. After a full morning of essential committee work, IIAR will host a half-day course on mechanical integrity for ammonia refrigeration. This program highlights the importance of mechanical integrity, how it relates to process safety management and the general-duty clause. Topics include mechanical integrity program minimum requirements; procedures for equipment, piping, vessels and safety systems; preventive maintenance; audits; training; and quality assurance. Though the registration fee for this session is charged in addition to the regular conference program, each attendee will receive CEU credits for his or her participation.
At the core of the four-day program is the technical program. Beginning on Monday, March 19 and continuing through March 21, the technical conference agenda includes peer-reviewed technical paper presentations, experiential workshops and interactive panels. Attendees can earn PDH and CEU credits. Presentation topics include using air as the working fluid in a refrigeration system; large-scale flammability and explosivity testing of ammonia; ultra-low charge ammonia refrigeration; best practices in managing an OSHA NEP or EPA GDC inspection; employee engagement as an indicator of PSM program success or failure; emergency response in an ammonia facility; hot gas defrost in ammonia refrigeration systems; construction materials for evaporative condensers; and stainless steel piping in industrial refrigeration.
In addition, technical workshop presentations will include ammonia scrubbing with CO2; re-evaluating lubricant selection and testing at low temperatures; CalARP program 4 and CalOSHA 5189.1; water as a refrigerant in efficient centrifugal chillers; world guide to low charge ammonia.
Other events planned during the event include exhibitor-sponsored technomercial presentations; IIAR committee meetings; networking opportunities during hosted breakfasts, breaks, lunches and receptions. Attendees can experience the Olympics during a tour and demonstration at the training center in Colorado Springs. On Wednesday, two panel presentations will look at research and cross-cutting topics as part of a closing forum.
Throughout the four-day event, the exhibition hall will play host to manufacturers displaying industrial refrigeration system products and services. Attendees can see first-hand some of the industrial refrigeration technologies they’ve learned about elsewhere. Each booth will be staffed with engineers experienced with ammonia refrigeration to help attendees learn more about exhibitors’ capabilities.
Finally, if that’s not enough, attendees can sit for certificate program testing during the IIAR meeting by participating in the IIAR Academy of Natural Refrigerants certificate program. Two certificate programs are available for testing: IIAR certificate course and the IIAR 4, 5 and 8 course.
