Refrigerant Chosen for European Air-Cooled Scroll Chiller Platform

Opteon XL41 (R-454B) refrigerant, a low global warming potential (GWP) replacement for R-410A, was selected by Johnson Controls for its York YLAA scroll chiller platform in Europe. Reasons cited for the selection include Opteon XL41’s capacity ranging of 190 to 530 kW.

According to the refrigerant-maker Chemours Co., Opteon XL41 can replace R-410A in positive-displacement, direct-expansion chiller, air-conditioning and heat-pump applications. With a GWP of 466, Opteon XL41 reduces CO₂ emissions by 78 percent compared to R-410A and more than a 30 percent reduction in CO₂ emissions when compared to R-32, another industry candidate to replace R-410A.

According to Chemours, Opteon XL41 was designed to help OEMs transition from R-410A without requiring major equipment design modifications.
