Both ethylene glycol and propylene glycol are used as coolants to lower the freezing point for industrial use. For many reasons other than toxicity and environmental reasons, it is necessary to know which of the two glycols is present in a given water. The test kit that allows users to determine which chemical is present in a water mixture in the field, without requiring mass spectroscopy or gas chromatography. This test kit is intended for use with industrial concentrations where glycol is being used as a coolant or antifreeze. If concentrations fall to the level that the glycol will not be detected with refractive index or specific gravity, or if both glycols are present in the same sample, the test kit is not effective.
