Ahold Delhaize USA has partnered with Americold to build two fully automated frozen warehouses that will expand its cold storage space by 24 million ft3. The new facilities are part of the Dutch-based company’s supply-chain transformation plan as it transitions to an integrated, self-distribution model.

The facilities will be located in Plainville, Conn., which will serve Ahold Delhaize USA’s Northeast brands, and in Lancaster, Pa., which will serve Ahold Delhaize USA’s Mid-Atlantic brands. The warehouses, which will create approximately 200 new jobs each, will increase product freshness and speed of delivery.

According to Americold, the two facilities will deliver a combined 59,000 pallet positions. The facilities will incorporate frozen storage warehouse design techniques and technology advancements to enhance automation.

Ahold Delhaize USA’s distribution networks include 16 traditional and eCommerce distribution centers that service the local brands of Ahold Delhaize USA, including Food Lion, Giant Food, Hannaford and Stop & Shop. The network will grow to 23 facilities by 2023.
