A spiral freezer enabled Norway’s Leroy Seafood to increase production of its fish fillet products by more than 30 percent at its facility in Melbu in the Arctic Circle. It is designed to freeze ~2,425 lb/hr (1,100 kg/hr) of vacuum-packed fish fillets.
Freezer manufacturer Starfrost, based in the United Kingdom, had installed a spiral freezer for Leroy Seafood more than 18 years ago. Leroy tapped Starfrost for the newly installed spiral freezer, which has a 50 percent larger belt area than the older unit though it has been designed to operate with the same fan power, according to Starfrost.
The new freezer is designed to allow Leroy Seafood to significantly increase product output while avoiding an increase in energy use. The custom-designed spiral freezer also includes an automated clean-in-place (CIP) system.
