GEA Group AG provided Innocent, a European smoothie and juice brand, with the process technology for what it says is the world’s first carbon-neutral juice factory.
GEA is responsible for the process, refrigeration and heating technology. A GEA heat pump will recover waste heat from the refrigeration systems and reuse it in other process steps. The pasteurization temperatures can be lowered from 95°C (203°F) to 90°C (194°F), making it possible to fit a heat pump and thaw frozen with warm water instead of steam. GEA also advised Innocent to use two separate heating circuits: one set to 65°C (149°F) for cleaning and the other to 90°C for pasteurization and sterilization.
The production facility, which is located at the Rotterdam Food Hub in the Netherlands, is scheduled to open in spring 2022.
