Evaporative condensers are normally considered permit-required confined spaces (PRCS). Under certain conditions, evaporative condensers can be reclassified to non-permit required confined spaces. A guideline document from the International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration (IIAR) is intended to help users understand these classifications.

The guideline explains how end users can develop procedures that will enable them to reclassify evaporative condensers and allow employees to enter them without the necessity of PRCS requirements. Because the isolation and/or removal of ammonia from evaporative condenser circuit(s) can be challenging and will sometimes be required for reclassification, various methods are presented.
